Congratulations to Eve Beere and Millie Perrin who won a silver medal in the Women’s Junior Coxless Pairs at the BR Junior National Championships last weekend!
Having breezed through the National Championships qualifying rounds, Millie (stroke) and Eve (bow) lined between crews from Tideway Scullers School (TSS) and Tyne Rowing Club in the final. The Cantabs pair didn’t have their best start, and found themselves rowing in considerable wash from TSS, who were repeatedly warned by the Umpire as they steered out of their lane into Millie and Eve’s water. At about 1500m down, one of the TSS rowers seemed to be overwhelmed by the power of her partner and the TSS boat swung round into the path of Millie and Eve’s bow. The race was halted, TSS disqualified and the fastest three remaining crews were sent back to the start for a rerow.
In the rerow, against Tyne RC and Cambois RC, Tyne and Cantabs were neck and neck in the first 500m, but Tyne powered through the middle kilometer of the race to lead by clear water with just 500m remaining. Knowing that they had a strong finish Eve and Millie wound it up, closing the leaders down with every stroke but Tyne had enough of an advantage and crossed the line with half a length in hand.
The girls’ success builds on the silver they won at the National Schools Regatta in May. Both girls learnt to row with Cantabs and have this year been rowing with the Hill’s Road squad and the Senior Women in addition to their training in the pair.
