Cantabs Winter League wins

The Winter League series of three Head Races has been taking place in Cambridge since the mid-1960s, between the A14 Bridge and the Finish post on Stourbridge Common.

The Cantabs Senior Men have made a habit of being the fastest crew, with wins in the last four years, and 2016 was no exception. Cantabs M1 were the only crew to post a time below 10 minutes in the first leg, and below 9 minutes for the second and third races. Their cumulative time of 27:40 was nearly a minute faster than the second placed 9’s “Client” crew (28:37).

The Hills Road Boys 1st VIII finished 11th overall, to win the M.J18 VIII category and Joe O’s quad won the M.Mas C/D 4x

Cantabs Senior Women opted to compete elsewhere this year, but despite having raced at WEHoRR the day before the third leg of Winter League, four of the WEHoRR C-crew from the Intermediate Squad maintained their lead in W.IM3 4+ and were the fastest W.4+ overall. Another Intermediate Squad crew, made up of women who recently  moved up from the Novice Squad, were the fastest 4+ of the day – credit to David Winch and Sam Hardy whose coaching has supported their progress!

Many of the juniors didn’t have enough competition to be awarded prices, but Harvey Jacklin won the M.J18 1x category and the Cantabs W.J14 4x+, and were the Fastest W4x+.

Cambridge News published brief coverage of the Cantabs men’s results. Full Winter League results are not yet online, but are expected to appear on the CRA website soon.
