January 2020 Head Race Success

The new year saw Cantabs crews from across the club take to the water to race in two on-Cam races in a wide variety of boat classes, with many successful outcomes.

Winter League 1

Winter League 1 was the first race for Cantabs crews in the new year, and saw 32 entries from across the club and 11 first place finishes.

There was a lot of success in eights, with the Senior Women finishing as the fastest women overall, their Women’s Championship 8+ the 10th fastest 8+ of the day. The Women’s Club A 8+ also finished 1st in their category, and were the 2nd fastest women’s crew of the day. Members of these crews went on to double up, where their W4- was the fastest in their category and finished as the 4th fastest women’s crew of the day. Two W4+ had no opposition, but went on to finish comfortably ahead of many larger boats. The 3rd fastest women’s crew of the day was the J18 girls’ 8+ who won their event.

Women’s Championship 8+

Not to be outdone, the junior boys also had success in eights, with the Hills Road boys finishing 1st in both the Club B and Novice 8+ events. The Aquaphobes also raced well, to finish 1st in MasCD.8+ and achieve their highest ever overall placing at Winter League.

There were other masters event successes, with ChiYing Chen posting the fastest time by 52 seconds in the Women’s Mas.1x, though closely followed after handicap adjustment by only 1 second! Jacqui Robinson and Syra Vanderhoof raced well to finish 1st in the Women’s MasEF.2x, and 1st and 2nd places in the Women’s Mas.4x were both occupied by composite crews containing Cantabs athletes.

Elsewhere, there was a host of 2nd place finishes in Club 1x, J16/17 1x, J4x+, W.J15.4x+ and Championship 8+ which means it will all be to play for in legs 2 and 3 in February and March.

Winter Head to Head

The Winter Head to Head sees crews race bridge-to-bridge with and then against the stream, and their cumulative times calculated. After times were correctly published (after a mishap which saw a Mixed Masters F 2x beating the men’s world record!) 6 crews eventually came home with some pots.

Aquaphobes

Repeating their success from Winter League, the Senior Women finished with the two fastest W8+, with the A crew’s time potentially a course record. The Aquaphobes finished as the fastest MasDEF.8+ once again, with other masters successes in other events. Cantabs won the MasD.4x and were the fastest 4x overall by over 1 minute, and a Cantabs/Chesterton/Champs W4x won their event. Andrew Morley won the MasDEFG.1x, and was the fastest 1x of the day. The 2nd and 3rd fastest scullers overall were Jen Titterington and ChiYing Chen from the Senior Women’s Squad, beating out 4 men’s singles in the process.
