Cantabs has 2 junior performance squads to provide focused training for junior rowers who are interested in training more frequently and racing competitively.
Currently there are 2 mixed performance squads: J16 and J18. Younger juniors can find information about training opportunities on the general Junior Squads page of the website.
If you’re interested in joining one of our junior performance squads, please contact the Junior Vice-Captain (via the Committee page).
J18 Performance Squad
This squad is for rowers aged 18 and under who are looking to train frequently and compete in top junior events. You don’t need to have this level of experience already, but you need to be committed and ready to improve.
The training plan normally involves 6-8 sessions per week, with a mixture of different types of training. There are lots of opportunities to gain race experience, as the J18 Squad races frequently both on and off the Cam. This includes national events like Schools’ Head of the River, National Schools’ Regatta, Brit Junior Champs and Henley Women’s Regatta.
There is also lots of support available to help junior athletes achieve individual goals, including those who want to aim for GB junior trials.
J16 First Squad
This squad is for rowers aged 16 and under aiming to race competitively both locally and nationally. The J16 Squad competes in a lot of on-Cam races, and have also had success at a national level, racing in a variety of national junior events.
In 2018, the J16 Squad sent a girls’ 8+ and a boys’ 4x- to Junior Inter-Regionals after they were selected to represent the Eastern Region. Both crews performed very well, and the girls went on to win bronze in their event!
