Road to British Masters at Peterborough & Nottingham

A number of Cantabs masters rowers took part at Peterborough Spring Regatta, and Nottingham Club and Masters Regatta recently as their preparation for the British Rowing Masters Regatta which takes place on 16/17 June.

Peterborough Spring Regatta

Peterborough is run over 2 days, with Sunday’s programme including masters events in addition to normal status events.

On the Saturday, the Intermediate Women’s Squad sent an 8+ to compete as the squad begin their preparation for Town Bumps in July. They finished 2nd in their heat, facing Jesus College, Leeds University and Lea in the final. After a good race, which demonstrated the improvements they have made in recent weeks, they were pleased to have finished 2nd behind Jesus College.

Intermediate Women’s 8+

On the Sunday, 2 masters crews took to the water. The MasD 4x of Chris Dale, David Richardson, Andrew Morley and Paul Meadows suffered problems in training due to Chris being ill. On race day, Stefan Graf from Rob Roy RC subbed in and, with the rest of the crew, put in a good performance despite the lack of preparation. Amongst the crews in their final were St Ives RC’s 4x, who have previously medalled at the British Rowing Masters Championships. Whilst eventually losing to St Ives by 1.5 lengths, the Cantabs crew had a strong finish to their race and clocked a good time, showing potential for the future.

Andrew went on to race in MasC.1x later on, and did well to finish 2nd overall.

Thank you to Chesterton RC and Jesus College for helping with trailering, and Stefan for subbing in.

Nottingham Club & Masters Regatta

On 27th May, Cantabs had 3 entries at Nottingham Club & Masters. For the Aquaphobes (the Cantabs Men’s Masters Performance Squad), this was their first outing to the National Watersports Centre, where the British Rowing Masters Championships will take place.

On a particularly windy day, they enjoyed some hard-fought races in Masters D 8+, 4+ and 1x, finishing 3rd in each event.
