Georgie finishes 8th fastest W1x at Scullers Head

Saturday 2nd December saw 7 Cantabs scullers take to the water to race at Scullers Head, with all putting in good performances on a stretch which couldn’t be more different to the calm and bendy waters of the Cam.

There was some minor controversy, after changing conditions throughout the race saw those scullers who started lower down benefiting much more from faster water; however, finish positions within each category were unaffected as all scullers for each category started in groups.

After finishing as 12th fastest woman last year, Georgie Plunkett (starting 139th) was keen for a good race this year. She had a fantastic race to finish 2nd in Senior Lightweight, only 5 seconds behind the winning Thames RC sculler. Georgie’s time of 20:31 put her as the 8th fastest woman of the day and 4th fastest lightweight.

Jimmy Adams (starting 24th) completed the course in 19:40, finishing 4th in Senior and 60th overall. Andrew Morley (starting 179th) finished 13th in Masters C in 21:09, an improvement on his 22nd place finish in that event last year.

Sean Collins (starting 262nd) put in a good performance to finish 7th in Club in a time of 19:51. Hannes Burfeind (starting 251st) had his first ever 1x race on the Thames and did well to finish 14th in Club in 20:31.

Those newer to sculling on the Thames had a long wait to start, with Jon McCree-Grey starting 410th. He did well to finish 8th in the Fresher event. Nicole Hendy (starting 354th) enjoyed her first Tideway 1x experience, and finished 8th in the Women’s Club event.

Thank you to Putney Town RC for hosting the scullers for the day.
