Success at Nottingham

Over the weekend of 14th/15th May, several crews raced at the Nottingham City Regatta (Saturday) and the Nottingham Club and Masters Regatta (Sunday), multi-lane regattas which take place at the National Watersports Centre.

On the Saturday, Ellie Darlington ventured out for her first ever regatta in a single, and after a comfortable win in the heat of W.NOV.1x, she earned a 14 second victory in the final. She was then fourth in the IM3 event, learning that whilst rate 26 might work in novice, it certainly won’t in IM3! On the Sunday, after missing her W.MasA.1x race thanks to writing the time down wrong, Ellie came second in W.IM2.1x.

The senior men’s squad fielded 3 crews on the Saturday, with an IM2.8+ of Finn Grimwood, Callan Swanson, Guy Fiddian, Hannes Burfiend, James Quarrington, James O’Dell, Peter Ford, James Price and cox Amy Henfry finishing 3rd in their heat, but bouncing back in their final, by beating the faster crews from their heat to finish 4th. Some of the crew then went on to race in IM2.4+, with Callan, Finn, Riccy Hereros-Symons and JQ finishing second. Jimmy Adams raced in IM1.1x, finishing 4th.

A Hills Road crew won their heat in the men’s novice 8+ event, with Dom Bennett, Finlay Beauchamp, Harvey Dinkle, Eddie Crampton, Freddie Scott, Daniel Shefford, Karl Miracle, Sam Gibbs and cox Matt Adams finishing third.

Coach Andy Johnson said, “I’m very pleased with this performance. It’s encouraging when a crew is going up at the end of a 2k; it shoes guts as well as dedication to training, particularly against crews most of whom were much older. It was good preparation for the National Schools Rgatta in two week’s time, to be held at the Olympic course at Eton Dorney.”

A women’s intermediate squad crew raced in the W.NOV.8+ event, this being the first multi-lane for the whole crew, and the first off-Cam regatta for some. They did well to finish 5th in a heat containing the top-finishing crews from the final.

Georgia Vann, Bailee Stratton, Emma Gordon, Maddie Koesterman and cox Will Miller were triumphant in Saturday’s W.IM3.4+ by over 4 seconds over the second placed Reading.

Another four of Barbora Janulikova, Georgie Plunkett, Lindsey Tate, Jordan Bruce and coxed Esther Momcilovic raced on the Sunday, winning W.IM2.4+ over their masters-age squadmates Gill Cooper, Hana Lango Allen, Judith Weik, Sue Waterhouse and cox Sara Russo, before going on to win the coxless event against Reading.

The masters crew were third in a high-quality field in the Masters C coxed fours.
