Winter Head wins

At the Cambridge Winter Head on Saturday 19th November, there were some good performances from the lower women’s squads and the junior boys.

The Cantabs women’s squad structure involves a progression from the Learn to Row programme, to the Progression Squad, to the Intermediate Squad, to the Senior Squad. Newcomers to the club may join any of the squads depending on their experience and how much training they want to do. The Senior Women’s Squad didn’t race this weekend, and instead it was left to the Intermediate and Progression Squads to make their mark.

The top crew from the Intermediate Women’s Squad won W.IM3.8+, 45 seconds clear of 2nd place. This made the crew of Emma Dalrymple, Rachael Crockford, Alice Brownjohn, Emma Siragher, Sally Hames, Megan Leoni, Debbie Morley, Rebecca Cicolecchia and cox Laura Brightman the 7th fastest of the 67 women’s eights racing.

The Progression Squad’s Barbara Blacklaws, Jane Gilbert, Laura Hourigan, Jennifer Mullucks, Alyson Saville, Servane Lenne, Aoife McMahan, Irina Abinzova and cox Emma Metcalf comfortably won W.NOV.8+ in a first race win for many of the crew. Coach David Winch said he was “very happy with the crew’s performance, given the relative inexperience of many of the athletes, who have now received a confidence boost from the result and are looking forward to future races”.

The men’s novice 8+ event was won in fine style by the junior boys, all of whom are students at Hills Road, in a time 1 minute 40 seconds faster than the next fastest crew in their event. The Cantabs junior boys were also successful in both the J14 and J15 coxed quad events.

A special thank you to Paul Haines for organising the event, and to all of the athletes and juniors’ parents who volunteered their time to make the Winter Head run so smoothly. Congratulations to Jesus College M1 and Clare College W1 for being the fastest men’s and women’s crews of the day. We hope that all of the 236 crews who took part enjoyed the race and will come back next year!

If you are interested in joining any of the Cantabs squads, please contact the relevant Vice-Captain via our Committee page.
