A good start to Winter League

Senior Men’s Champ 8+

The 33 Cantabs crews who raced at the 1st Winter League of 2018 had good races, with many of them leading their events despite the cold and snow which left many unable to feel their hands whilst racing!

As with last year, the Senior Women occupied the top 2 spots for women’s eights. The 1st eight finished as the 7th fastest crew overall, and suffered a repeat of 2017’s 1st leg when cox Esther Momcilovic had to execute a difficult double overtake of 2 men’s eights as Jessie Spivey, Ellie Darlington, Andrea de Bruin, Emma Dalrymple, Anita Holender, Hannah Stewart, Fi Macklin and Georgia Vann raced past the railway bridge.

Hannah Stewart, Valentina Sassow and Anna Suchankova from the 2nd 8+ then teamed up with Andrea de Bruin and cox Sara Russo to finish as the fastest W4+ of the day, beating a number of women’s eights and coxless fours along the way.

The 3rd fastest women’s crew of the day was a W.J18.4x, with the W.J16.4x also winning their event. The Junior First Squad girls also came home as the fastest women’s novice 8+ by over 30 seconds, completing a good set of results for their squad.

Motley Crew’s MasABC.8+

The men’s novice 8+ was won by Cantabs’ Hills Road boys’ B crew. The A crew finished 16th overall, which was a good result for a crew containing many who have been rowing for less than a year. There were other men’s wins for Jimmy Adams in the M1x, with Jack Goode finishing as 3rd fastest M1x. He then teamed up with Georgie Plunkett, who was the fastest W1x by a considerable margin, to win the M2x event. The Senior Men’s 8+ finished 2nd overall.

Full results can be found here.

Next up will be Quintin Eights Head in London this Saturday, which 2 Senior and 1 Intermediate Women’s crews will be racing in as preparation for the Women’s Eights Head of the River Race in March.
