2022 got off to a good start at Winter League 1, which saw Cantabs finish as the fastest women’s and men’s eights, leading in 7 eights categories, as well as the fastest women’s 1x.
Strong rows from Cantabs women’s crews saw the Women’s Championship 8+ finish as the fastest women’s crew overall for the 5th year in a row, after an exciting race which saw an overtake on Champs M1 take place around Grassy Corner. Another crew from the Senior Women’s Squad finished as the 2nd fastest W8+ overall, also enjoying an overtake on Chesterton W1 during their race, leading the Women’s Club A 8+ event.
The Women’s Club B 8+ saw close competition from two Cantabs crews, with the Hills Road Girls’ 8+ coming out on top over the Intermediate Women’s Squad crew who finished 2nd in the event. There was a second crew of athletes from the Intermediate Squad who raced in the Women’s Masters E 8+ event, and dominated their event by 31 seconds over the 2nd fastest crew.
There was also a masters win in Women’s Masters CD 8+ for the Progression Squad, who were able to put together a masters crew to race (though aren’t a masters squad).
The Cantabs men followed suit to win the Men’s Masters CD 8+, with the Aquaphobes racing well to finish nearly 2 minutes clear of the 2nd place crew. The his-and-hers wins also took place in the overall standings, with the Men’s Championship 8+ finishing as the fastest crew of the day over a Cambridge 99 crew. The Senior Men also fielded a Club 8+ crew, who finished 2nd overall in their event despite this being their first outing together.
ChiYing Chen, winner of WMasB1x at Scullers Head in September, finished as the fastest Women’s 1x of the day and Charlotte Anderson finished as the 4th fastest W1x.
