Zac Purchase tells the inside story

Zac Purchase, MBE, a 3 times World Champion and winner of Olympic Gold in Beijing and Silver in London, in the Men’s Lightweight Double Scull, recently visited a junior Learn to Row session at Cantabs.

After a brief session on the water and some photographs, the group moved indoors where Zac helped the older juniors coach the beginners on the ergs. Zac then gave a talk about his rowing career, talking about his motivation and telling a little of his Olypmic experience…particularly about enjoying the delights of the athlete’s village once the constraints of a lightweight diet were lifted post-competition! Zac handed round his Olympic medals for everyone to see, and patiently posed for photos with all-comers!

After talking to the juniors, Zac even found a few minutes to pop into The Haymakers for a quick chat with some of senior rowers and to draw the winning prize in the club’s monthly 5050 fundraising draw!

Zac’s visit was organised by Living Sport, the County Sports Partnership for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, whose Sportivate Funding has helped to support our junior Learn to Row courses. The Cambridge News featured Zac’s visit with a centre-page spread in their Junior Sports section.
