Boathouse Rules & Use of Equipment

The locations of the Cantabs and CRA boathouses are shown here.

Boathouse Rules

The following rules are designed to ensure harmonious running of the club:

  • Observe the Club’s Safety Policy
  • Pay your subscriptions on time
  • Only use equipment for which you have permission (see below)
  • Book use of the equipment in advance using the online booking system.
  • Do not make any significant changes to the boats without permission from either the Equipment Officer, your Squad Leader or the Club Captain. Ensure the Equipment Officer is made aware when any agreed changes have been completed
  • Wipe down boats after use
  • Keep the boathouse tidy
  • Personal electrical appliances:
    • Mains appliances (but excluding heaters) may be used on Club property but only in the presence of the owner. The owner must remove them upon departing from site.
    • There are no restrictions on battery powered devices.
  • Club-owned electrical appliances: any faults or breakages should be reported straightaway to the Boathouse Manager or a committee member. Please disconnect physically and affix an appropriate warning to the plug.
  • Turn off lights and shut the boathouse up if you think you may be the last one out (even if other crews are on the water)
  • If a boat or blades are damaged:

Failure to observe these rules or careless use of the equipment may result in a ban or a forfeit of membership.

Use of Boats and Other Equipment

Before you may use any club equipment, you must have permission from your squad leader or the relevant Vice-Captain. They will determine what equipment is appropriate, and whether there are any other requirements e.g., whether you need someone on the bank. Members wishing to use small boats outside of coached outings should first demonstrate their competency. This is for your own safety and to prevent damage to boats.

Squad leaders: you should be able to access the Equipment List; please contact the Secretary if you are a squad leader who cannot access this document. You can only authorise use of equipment with Permission category C on the list; for any other equipment, you must talk to your Vice-Captain or the Captain. If you have any questions about equipment usage, again, talk to your Vice-Captain or the Captain.

Permission categories are also shown in the Boat Booker.

NB: non-members are not to use any boats without explicit permission from the Captain.

Boathouse Fire Safety

The Fire Risk Assessment required by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is available to view by any member by request to the Boathouse Manager or Club Secretary. It is reviewed each year at the AGM or upon any occasion risk parameters change.
