Great performances on the Cam in a packed weekend of racing

You wait all year for a race, and then the next weekend 2 come at once!

Saturday saw plenty of wins for Cantabs’ adult squads in eights, with Sunday dominated by the Cantabs juniors.

Spring Head to Head

The Spring Head to Head, where results are based on cumulative times from a downstream and upstream bridge to bridge, saw Cantabs wins in 7 events.

Following on from the previous weekend’s winning performances, the Senior Women finished once again with the fastest W8+ of the day, and 4th fastest crew overall. They also fielded the fastest W4+ and ChiYing Chen was the fastest W1x.

The Intermediate Women’s Squad raced well to finish as the fastest intermediate 8+ by a comfortable margin. There was another eights win for the Aquaphobes, who were the fastest MasDE8+.

Andrew Morley and Chris Dale, entered as Masters D, were the fastest M2x of the day, and there was also a double sculls win for the J16-17 2x.

City Sprints

Sunday saw the first side-by-side racing of the season, on a 500m (ish) course up the Reach, with Cantabs crews having a successful day, with Cantabs losing only 2 races in the entire event against non-Cantabs crews.

The Cantabs juniors were out in full force, coming home with wins in 6 events and Cantabs v Cantabs finals in some cases, including the J16/18 4x and J16/17 2x. There were comfortable victories for a number of the junior crews, including W J15/16 2x who won by 4L and the J14/15 2x who both won easily over their opposition from City of Cambridge.

It was a great weekend for a lot of our up-and-coming juniors to get some valuable side-by-side experience. All the pots are a nice bonus.

There were celebrations in the Woodard household this weekend as brothers Tom and William won the J15 and J17 single sculls event, respectively.

One of the closest races of the day was a semi-final race between two scratch matched eights from the Senior Women’s Squad. After beating Caius W1 in the first round, the ‘Hunter’ 8+ faced off against the ‘Cheese’ 8+ in a close race which saw the ‘Cheese’ 8+ edge a win by a canvas over their squad mates. Jennie Astley, Abi Bartlett, Becca Hatton, Molly Shaw, Katie Brown, Cam Lardy, Emily Hillan, Yfke van der Heijden and cox Isabel Nimmo then went on to a comfortable victory over Peterhouse College W1 in the final.
